Microsoft has announced in the last week that, when Microsoft Edge will be available (the browser that will replace Internet Explorer), some old technologies won't be supported anymore.

Included in these technologies is ActiveX. Developpers used ActiveX to add new functionnalities to applications (or websites) that weren't available at the time. For example, the possibility to upload, resize and compress images. With all the new technologies and with HTML5, Microsoft didn't feel like it needed to support those old technologies, which were causing lots of problems security-wise.

Here's a complete list of all the old technologies that won't be supported anymore:

  • ActiveX

  • Browser Helper Objects (BHO)

  • Document modes

  • Vector Markup Language (VML)

  • VBScript

  • attachEvent / removeEvent

  • currentStyle

  • Conditional Comments

  • IE8 layout quirks

  • DirectX filters and transitions
